Session Description

Cited as one of the best presentations at E2.0 SF, it was put in a very unfriendly time slot. This session will update the material and revisit the Dark Side for a larger, more international audience.

The potential of seamless contact with anyone anywhere at any time seems to promise improvements in productivity, most ROI calculations overlook the hidden costs to this ubiquitous access. A growing body of research is showing the already overly interrupt-driven, multi-tasking work environment can be detrimental to productivity and even the quality. Further, on-line access and collaboration is still less effective than in-person meetings. Finally, these technologies align better with some individuals’ personalities. This session will explain how to look into the psychology of the individual and the organization to anticipate where these misalignments lie and provide strategies for mitigating them.

I for one agree - it WAS the killer presentation at San Francisco, filled with a compelling story and argument - and original research.

This is a must see. Thanks Greg!

Sounds exceptionally interesting and I'll be very sorry to miss it.

Am currently having an interesting discussion with a large vendor who is developing a product to mine all emails to build a 'big brother' database of who knows what in order to achieve a 'more efficient organisation'.

I cant find the original research but IBM Institute did a study in about 2002 / 3 into the way users would react to random interruptions by products such as Instant Messaging.

As a 'pathological helper' who mostly tends to answer incoming requests before getting on with my day job, I'm always on the look out for solutions that allow diifferent users to use the tools in ways that suit them - and indeed that let a particular user use the tools in different ways depending on their current workload.

For example, if you havent got time to visit a workspace tool like Jive to just monitor it by receiving a digest email which shows how many times your content is viewed and commented on, or which lets you reply to comments by email when you havent got time to dive into the browser.
